In Chapter 1 of The Forest of Hands and Teeth, it starts off introducing the main character and narrator, Mary. Mary explains the pain her and her family had felt when her father had "died" and become unconsecrated, meaning becoming a somewhat vampire living in the forest of hands and teeth. Every how many days, Mary's mother and herself visit the fenceline that blocks the danger coming from the Unconsecrated in the forest. However, one day without informing anyone, Mary's mother decides to visit her husband on the other side of the fenceline. as a result of not being with anyone at the time, she gets bitten by one of the creatures and the pain spreads throughout her entire body.

The Sisters are the few women who know "everything" and worship our savior, Jesus Christ. The women inform Mary in the tragic incident about her mother and the insist on killing her to remove her pain and danger for everyone else in the town. They've given Mary a couple days to visit her mother before they take her life and send her with all the other infected to the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Every minute of the time she spent with her mother before she was sent, gaurds would watch her mother's every move.

Obviously at this point, this book starts off very dramatic and emotional but it's really really good(:
